Attack on Titan - Levi Ackerman

Remember… when Levi brings the syringe toward Erwin’s arm, and the commander raises his hand as though he is a child in his father’s classroom? Two dying people lie on a Shiganshina rooftop. Armin has been burned by the Colossal Titan’s heat. Erwin was mortally wounded charging the Beast Titan. Levi has one dose of serum: one can become a Titan and survive by consuming the captured Bertholdt. Eren and Mikasa plead for Armin. Floch insists humanity needs Erwin. Levi chooses his commander and orders everyone away. Then Erwin lifts his hand. It is not a conscious refusal. Delirious, he asks his father how they know nobody lives beyond the Walls. Before Levi is the boy whose unanswered question shaped his entire life. Levi remembers asking him to abandon that dream and lead the recruits toward death. Erwin thanked him. Bringing him back would mean demanding more sacrifices. Armin receives the serum. Erwin dies. Levi explains that it was time to let his commander rest. The unfulfilled promise to kill the Beast Titan remains his to carry. Where others saw humanity’s indispensable leader, Levi finally allowed himself to see his exhausted friend.
