Batman
Remember… Batman fighting criminals before readers even knew his tragic origin? Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, he first appeared in 939’s Detective Comics #27. The murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents was revealed roughly six months later, in issue #33. That story explained why Bruce had made fighting crime his lifelong mission. The earliest Batman was also considerably more ruthless. In his first adventure, he knocks a criminal into a vat of acid and considers the man’s death a fitting end. The principle against killing that later became central to his character was not fully established from the beginning. His world developed gradually too. The Joker and Catwoman both debuted in 1940’s Batman #1, although in separate stories. The city now inseparable from his identity received the name Gotham in 1941’s Batman #4. Through these changes, his foundation remained human ability. Batman has no supernatural powers: he trains his body and mind, investigates evidence, prepares strategies, and uses advanced technology. Behind the mask and equipment stands Bruce Wayne—a man who responded to personal tragedy by trying to prevent others from suffering the same loss.
