Remember… when Light Yagami asks to be confined, claiming that even he suspects he might be Kira? He sits in a cell under constant surveillance. L waits for him to reveal himself. Light knows that continuing his plan requires surrendering everything he knows. He relinquishes ownership of the Death Note. His memories of being Kira disappear. The killings, Ryuk, the notebook, his calculations—all vanish from his mind. The Light remaining in that cell sincerely insists he is innocent. His confusion is real: he cannot understand his imprisonment for crimes he cannot remember. Outside, the killings continue. How can Light be Kira while constantly watched? Even this amnesia was planned. The investigation must eventually lead him to the notebook’s new owner and bring it within his reach again. Later, during Higuchi’s arrest, Light touches the Death Note. His memories return in a rush. His eyes widen as his past floods back. The case he has been sincerely investigating suddenly becomes the unfolding of his own design. He keeps hold of the notebook. A scrap hidden inside his watch awaits his next move. The investigators stand beside him, unaware that Kira has returned.
