Demon Slayer
Remember… the traditionally dressed heroes of Demon Slayer suddenly encountering trains and brightly lit city streets? That contrast comes from the story’s historical setting: Japan’s Taishō era, spanning 1912–1926. The country was rapidly modernizing, so mountain villages and older customs coexist with railways, electric lights, and urban life. For Tanjiro and his friends, these unfamiliar sights can be adventures in themselves. The spectacular battles also contain an interesting distinction. Breathing Styles combine controlled breathing, physical training, and sword techniques. The waves and flames generally convey the character of a swordsman’s movements—the fighters do not literally generate those elements. Demons’ supernatural abilities operate differently. Meanwhile, the Demon Slayer Corps is not officially recognized by the government. Its members fight to protect people, although much of the population knows neither the organization nor the threat it confronts. Their dangerous work takes place largely beyond public awareness. Nezuko is another exception within this world. Instead of eating humans, she recovers her strength through prolonged sleep, allowing her to remain beside her brother without feeding on the people they protect. Behind this entire world is Koyoharu Gotouge, the manga’s creator. The original story is complete and collected in 23 volumes, bringing Tanjiro and Nezuko’s journey to its conclusion.
