Remember… the Hashira gathering before Tanjiro for the first time? Each has a distinct personality, Breathing Style, and painful past, but their shared history began centuries before their births. Muzan Kibutsuji became the first demon. His descendants slaughtered humans, while the related Ubuyashiki family suffered a curse that brought illness and early death. The family devoted itself to destroying Muzan and established the Demon Slayer Corps. Its strongest swordsmen became known as the Hashira—the “Pillars.” They support the organization, protect its fighters, and confront its most dangerous enemies. Later, Yoriichi Tsugikuni joined the Corps. The Hashira already existed; he taught them Breathing techniques. Unable to reproduce his Sun Breathing fully, other swordsmen adapted his teaching to their abilities. Water, Flame, Wind, and other styles developed from that foundation. The title is earned rather than inherited. A candidate must reach the rank of Kinoe and defeat fifty demons or a member of the Twelve Kizuki. The familiar nine Hashira are therefore one generation in a centuries-long struggle. Behind their strength stand lost families, teachers, and comrades—losses they turn into a responsibility to protect others.
