Remember… when Paul is woken at night and brought into a room where an elderly woman dressed in black is waiting? That’s Reverend Mother Mohiam. She sends Jessica outside and orders Paul to approach. He hesitates, so she uses the Voice, making him obey before he can resist. Then she presents a small box and tells him to put his right hand inside. Immediately, she holds a poisoned needle—the gom jabbar—against his neck. The condition is simple: withdraw his hand, and he dies. Imagine feeling your hand burning while knowing that pulling away will kill you. The pain keeps increasing. Paul’s breathing becomes strained, his face tightens, and tears fill his eyes. Outside, Jessica recites the litany against fear while her son undergoes the test. Mohiam watches whether he can control the instinct to escape. Gradually, Paul steadies himself. The pain remains, but he meets her gaze and keeps his hand inside. Finally, she lifts the needle and allows him to withdraw. He examines his hand: the skin is intact. What felt like burning and destruction was pain induced through his nerves.
