Grave of the Fireflies
Remember… when Seita and Setsuko release fireflies inside their shelter and can finally see each other’s faces in the darkness? For a little while, the abandoned bomb shelter feels like their own home. Tiny lights settle against the mosquito net and illuminate the children’s faces. Setsuko is delighted. Seita gets to be her older brother again—to entertain her and give her something beautiful. Overnight, the lights fade. The next morning, Seita finds Setsuko digging a small hole. She gathers the dead fireflies and buries them. Then she says their mother is in a grave, too. Seita stops. He thought he was still protecting her from that knowledge. But their aunt has already told her. His little sister has been carrying the loss without him realizing. He cries quietly, then kneels beside her and promises they will visit their mother’s grave. Setsuko asks why fireflies have to die so soon. He has no answer. Her question carries their mother’s absence into the small burial. Seita wanted to preserve her childhood, but could not keep grief outside it. The happiness they shared the night before was real—and that makes the morning’s darkness hurt even more.
