Remember… Nanami fighting through Shibuya Station with the last of his strength, while his thoughts drift toward a beach in Malaysia? Jogo’s flames have burned the left side of his body. His clothes hang in tatters, and every step looks exhausting. Then another group of transfigured humans blocks his path. Nanami raises his wrapped blade again. They crowd him from different directions. He turns, strikes and moves to the next attacker. Each swing drains him further, yet he keeps going. He still thinks about reaching Megumi, still wonders what happened to Maki and Naobito. The station gives way to glimpses of sunlight and open water. In his mind, Nanami walks barefoot along the sand. He wants a quiet home in Kuantan and time for the books he never finished. On the beach, his movements seem effortless; underground, they become heavy blows. The last attacker falls. A hand touches his back. Mahito is behind him. Nanami sees Haibara, who points toward Yuji. He hesitates, afraid his final words might burden the boy. Then he smiles and entrusts the rest to him. Mahito destroys his body. He never reaches that beach. Until the end, he keeps giving others a chance to survive.
