Kendrick Lamar
Remember… Kendrick Lamar’s story about seeing Dr. Dre and Tupac in person when he was a child? A crowd gathers on a street in Compton. A video for California Love is being filmed, and word spreads through the neighborhood. Kendrick’s father spots the shoot, returns home, and brings his son along. He lifts young Kendrick onto his shoulders so he can see over the crowd. Nearby, Dre and Tupac sit in a Bentley while the crew works around them. Kendrick watches musicians whose songs he has heard at home, unaware of how vividly he will remember this moment. About fifteen years later, Kendrick meets Dr. Dre. Dre is talking to him, but Kendrick’s mind keeps returning to that day: sitting on his father’s shoulders, watching from a distance the same man who is now standing in front of him. Then Dre asks him to go into the recording booth. In an instant, Kendrick has to shift from being a fan to doing his job. He later described it as a make-or-break moment in his career—and said he delivered. As a child, he watched music legends from above the crowd. Now he was in the studio, ready to make his own voice heard.
