Looney Tunes

Remember… when Elmer Fudd hunts Bugs Bunny with a shotgun, while Bugs looks as though he is simply enjoying a walk? Elmer creeps forward, watching for movement, convinced that this time the rabbit cannot escape. Bugs appears within reach and barely seems concerned. He takes a bite of his carrot, chews, and asks: **“What’s up, Doc?”** One casual question turns the encounter upside down. The armed hunter suddenly has to explain himself to the animal that should be running away. Bugs listens with leisurely interest. Before long, he is steering the conversation, while Elmer grows increasingly frustrated. The carrot remains an essential part of the performance: apparently, this threat does not even justify interrupting a snack. That difference makes their encounters so funny. Elmer treats the hunt with absolute seriousness. Bugs treats it as an opportunity to entertain himself. His confidence lives in the pauses—the unhurried chewing, the relaxed posture, the moment he makes Elmer wait for an answer. While the hunter considers how to catch him, Bugs is already considering his next joke. Elmer holds the weapon. Bugs sets the pace, and somehow the rabbit has made the hunter look like the one who wandered into a trap.
