Metallica
Remember… how Metallica’s story began with a newspaper advertisement? The band formed on October 28, 1981. Lars Ulrich was looking for fellow musicians through an advertisement in LA Recycler, which connected him with James Hetfield. That meeting laid the foundation for a partnership that would create one of heavy music’s most recognizable bands. Even the name “Metallica” was originally considered for a music magazine. Ulrich’s friend Ron Quintana was choosing between Metallica and Metal Mania for his fanzine. Lars recommended the latter and kept the former for his band. A potential magazine title eventually appeared on concert stages and millions of album covers. Another defining milestone was “One,” Metallica’s first music video. It combined footage of the band performing with scenes from the antiwar film Johnny Got His Gun. Building from a restrained opening to crushing intensity, the song conveys the desperation of a soldier catastrophically wounded by war and trapped within his own body. “One” also earned Metallica their first Grammy — recognition for a song whose technical complexity and heavy sound serve a deeply human tragedy.
