Monster - Johan and Tenma

Remember… when Johan stands before Tenma in the rain and points at his forehead—the place where the doctor once removed a bullet? Now Tenma holds a gun. Between them lie years of pursuit, murdered people, and the unbearable knowledge that the child he saved became the man he must stop. Johan calmly reminds him of his belief: every human life has equal value. That conviction was why Tenma operated on him instead of a powerful patient. Then Johan offers his answer: **“The only thing people are equal in is death.”** He wants Tenma to shoot. The doctor who saved his life must become the person who ends it, abandoning the principle that brought them together. Nina arrives and urges Tenma not to fire. She tells Johan she forgives him. But Johan threatens young Wim, making the choice almost unbearable. A child’s life now depends on what Tenma does with the trigger. That is what makes the confrontation so disturbing: Johan wants his death to destroy Tenma’s faith in life. Tenma must confront whether that faith can survive an encounter with someone who has caused such suffering. Johan states his philosophy. Tenma’s answer must come through his actions.
