Monster - Wolfgang Grimmer
Remember… the gunfire in Ruhenheim falling silent around Grimmer as he lies mortally wounded and speaks quietly to Tenma? The town has descended into fear, with people shooting at one another. Grimmer tries to protect others, but the attackers’ bullets strike him too. By the time Tenma finds him, the fighting around him is over. Tenma assumes Grimmer’s other persona, the Magnificent Steiner, stopped the gunmen. But Grimmer tells him that this time he acted himself, out of his own anger. Soon, Wim arrives. Grimmer reassures the boy and tells Tenma that when the rain clears, they should take Wim on a picnic, with good wine and cheese. Even now, he is thinking of a day he could have shared with his friends. Then his smile changes. Grimmer realizes he feels sadness—not because he is dying, but because he can finally mourn the child he lost years ago. He says people do not lose their emotions. His had wandered somewhere unknown and finally returned, like a letter reaching its recipient decades late. At the end, he remembers the television show from his childhood and imagines that the Magnificent Steiner must have become human again in its final episode. Tenma stays beside him, and Wim comes close. Grimmer does not spend his last moments alone.
