One Piece - Luffy by the Sea 3D panel

Remember… Rayleigh asking Luffy whether he could conquer the sea? Inside Shakky’s bar on Sabaody, the crew listens to Gol D. Roger’s former right-hand man. Here is someone who has already reached the end of the journey they are beginning. Rayleigh knows the world’s hidden history and the secret of the One Piece. Usopp cannot contain his curiosity. He starts asking about the treasure, but Luffy interrupts. “Usopp! Don’t ask him where it is—or whether it even exists!” Everyone turns toward their captain. Luffy is serious. Learning the answer now would take the meaning out of their adventure. He wants to discover it with his friends, through their own journey. Rayleigh turns to the powerful enemies awaiting them in the New World. “Can you conquer such a sea?” Luffy answers without hesitation. “I’m after freedom. To me, being Pirate King means being freer than anyone else on the sea.” Rayleigh smiles. The exchange makes Luffy’s ambition clear. He wants to choose his own course, sail with his friends and discover the unknown firsthand. Even when the answers sit across the table, he chooses the adventure.
