One Piece - Luffy Gear 5 3D panel

Remember… Luffy falling during his fight with Kaido, when everything seemed over? On Onigashima’s rooftop, he gathers his remaining strength. Gear 4 is running out, and he commits his last energy to another attack. Then Guernica, a CP0 agent, interferes and restrains him. Kaido’s devastating blow catches Luffy defenseless. Luffy collapses, motionless. His voice disappears—Momonosuke can no longer sense him. Kaido declares victory and descends to the fighting below. Then a strange rhythm begins beating in Luffy’s chest. Zunesha recognizes it: the Drums of Liberation. Luffy’s hair and clothes turn white, and a steam-like ribbon curls around his body. He smiles, then starts laughing. Even he wonders how he can move again and why he feels so free. His Devil Fruit has awakened. The supposed Gum-Gum Fruit is actually a Mythical Zoan—the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. Luffy names this state Gear 5 and returns to face Kaido. He performed no special ritual and never deliberately chose death. The awakening followed his devastating defeat, but the story does not establish a stopped heart as a requirement. As Kaido explains, awakening occurs when a user’s mind and body catch up with their Devil Fruit’s power.
