Remember… when Avtandil leaves King Rostevan a testament and departs without farewell to help Tariel? The king’s loyal knight prepares to leave. He knows his disappearance will wound Rostevan. He knows that danger awaits him. But far away, a friend needs the help he promised, and that promise gives him no rest. Avtandil writes. He asks forgiveness and explains the choice he could not persuade the king to accept. Abandoning his friend would violate his honour. Rostevan’s affection is precious to him; now he risks losing it to return to a man in distress. The letter becomes a testament. Avtandil considers the possibility that he may never return. He gives instructions concerning his possessions and asks that those in need receive assistance. Unable to see the journey’s end, he puts what remains behind him in order. Then he mounts his horse. The letter stays for the king. Behind him is Rostevan, whose answer he cannot await. Ahead is Tariel, to whom he gave his word. The horse carries him farther from the palace. Avtandil follows the road towards his friend.
