Taxi Driver

$210.00

Remember… Travis Bickle standing before the mirror in Taxi Driver, challenging his own reflection? He is alone, a gun concealed beneath his jacket. He adjusts his stance, tilts his head, and watches the glass as though somebody has insulted him. “You talkin’ to me?” He waits, but nobody can answer. He repeats the question, changes his tone, and suddenly draws his weapon. Then he rehearses again, practicing how to look like someone who cannot be intimidated. His loneliness becomes painfully visible. Travis invents the opponent, imagines the provocation, and prepares the violent response. The mirror lets him play both the humiliated man and the threatening avenger. The famous monologue was improvised. Paul Schrader’s screenplay provided the underlying action—Travis talking to himself and practicing with his gun—but Robert De Niro developed the words and performance, encouraged by Martin Scorsese. That process gives the scene its unsettling intimacy. We watch a man trying on a role as his private performance becomes a rehearsal for violence. Here, he can control the confrontation completely: even his imaginary opponent’s words belong to him.
