The Beatles

$220.00

Remember… when an ordinary London working day was interrupted by the Beatles playing overhead? It is January 30, 1969. On the roof of Apple Corps at Savile Row, John, Paul, George, and Ringo stand with their instruments. Billy Preston accompanies them on electric piano. Winter wind catches their clothes; London’s rooftops stretch out before them. Below, pedestrians stop and look up. Faces appear at office windows. Others climb onto neighboring roofs. An unsuspecting stretch of the city becomes their audience. Some people are delighted. Others complain about the noise. Police officers enter the building and ask for the performance to stop. Upstairs, the band keeps playing, returning to “Get Back.” What stays with you is their musical familiarity: exchanged looks, smiles, and the ease of finding one another’s rhythm despite the tensions surrounding those recording sessions. After roughly forty-two minutes, the instruments fall silent. Lennon thanks everyone and jokes: **“I hope we’ve passed the audition.”** One of the world’s most famous bands briefly sounds like a group of beginners seeking approval. Nobody announces a farewell. That meaning comes later, when this becomes their final public performance together. For now, they finish above the streets of London—with a joke.
