Tupac Shakur
Remember… how Tupac’s music carried warmth and honesty alongside anger and protest? Even his name has a history of resistance: he was named after Tupac Amaru, a name associated with Inca resistance. His parents belonged to the Black Panther movement, so discussions of injustice, racism, and human rights were part of his world from childhood. Those concerns later became recurring themes in his music. Yet one of his most memorable recordings is “Dear Mama,” his tribute to his mother, Afeni Shakur. Tupac expresses gratitude while acknowledging the difficult parts of their lives: poverty, addiction, and the struggle to hold a family together. The song received lasting recognition when it was selected for the Library of Congress’s 2009 National Recording Registry. His influence was honored again in 2017, when he became the first solo hip-hop artist inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He was selected in his first year of eligibility and inducted by Snoop Dogg, his friend and collaborator on “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.” Together, these stories reveal different sides of Tupac: a boy raised around political resistance, a grateful son, and a musician whose voice reached far beyond his lifetime.
