Remember… when Rorschach is sent to prison, surrounded by criminals he helped put away, and they decide their moment for revenge has arrived? His mask is gone. Before them stands Walter Kovacs: a short, red-haired man without weapons or the darkness of the streets to conceal him. They see an easy target. In the cafeteria, hostile eyes follow him. Then one inmate attacks. Rorschach reacts immediately, throwing hot cooking oil over his assailant. Screams fill the room. Men who stood confidently around him recoil. Guards rush to restrain him, but his attention remains fixed on the prisoners. There is no fear in his expression. He searches for no escape. Then he shouts: “None of you seem to understand. I’m not locked in here with you. You’re locked in here with me!” The words carry across the cafeteria. The guards hold him, but the inmates now watch differently. Removing his mask has done nothing to make him helpless. They lead Rorschach away, leaving the injured attacker and shaken witnesses behind. The prison still holds the same men. Now they understand who shares their confinement.
